Re: MM, links and WYSIWYG Editor

Dan Wilga-2
Technically, you could do this using the Export Tree function, found at
/admin/mm/dump . You can just use links in the format "mm/MMTID", where
MMTID is taken from the output of that command.

However, I'd recommend against this, as it doesn't scale very well. Your
site will continue to grow, and the list will get longer and longer. I
have two suggestions, instead:

1. Do something like we did on our site. If you look at this page,
you'll see a tiny "link" icon in the upper right. It's shaped like the
infinity symbol. Click on it, and the resulting popup provides a
relatively short link to the page, which can be copied into your
editor's link dialog.

2. It would be nice if someone were to write a new module to add this
feature into the wysiwyg module. This should use MM's tree browser
(mm_browser) functions. You can call up the browser with a URL like this:

         "mm-browser-load/" . mm_home_mmtid() . "-" .
MM_BROWSER_MODE_PAGE . "-0-r-r/";

Hi Tove,

It's been a longstanding request here at Amherst College, but we've never
had time to come at it. If you end up building it we'd be grateful ;-) I
see Dan's already offered some suggestions. Best of luck,

I wrote a wrapper for the LinkIt module (attached).  We at LU have created =
a whole mess of wrapper/extension modules to tie MM in with other stuff, wh=
ich we loosely lump under the module group "Monster Menus Tweaks" (which yo=
u'll see on the Modules screen).

We've also...
bridged Display Suite,
made a checkbox to show/hide the content titles (since the bracket thing wa=
s confusing to our users - our checkbox is backwards/forwards compatible wi=
th the bracket solution),
made a module to hide inactive children from an MM tree list of links (ther=
e's a checkbox for this, and we use it when we have several dozen child pag=
es underneath a page and don't want them all to show up until they are navi=
gated to),
built a Panels tie-in (created a checkbox to panelize an MM page),
and done a fix for getting Webform w/contextual links to work.
To name a few.  We plan on publishing the whole kit later, once our site is=
live and we can circle back and actually add documentation, tests, and the=
 rest of the necessary-for-a-proper-contrib-module stuff.

For now, if you need anything we have, let us know!

Jay Dansand, LU '08

Has anyone created a module that extracts all page links from the Monster M=
enus tree for use in a WYSIWYG editor?

We are trying to make it as easy as possible for the site administrators to=
link to other pages within the content, using the editor's insert link fea=

If so, you able to make any suggestions, recommend a module or share with u=
s anything that can help us in the right direction?

Oh boy that came through messily.  For those of you that didn't want to read through it (what the heck happened to the SMTP gateway?), here's a reprise... (Sorry for the inbox spam.)

This has been implemented as an extension to the LinkIt module, which works w/CKEditor and WYSIWYG modules.  We've also wrote a kit of other wrappers to get MM to work in our desired configuration, and I've thrown several of them up on github: https://github.com/jaydansand/mm_tweaks

They are ABSOLUTELY alpha.  Heck, some of our "README.txt" files in one module are clearly copy/pastes from previous modules.  We'll tidy them up and release them when we get a chance, right now we're just chugging through the "new functionality" phase.  I thought this was a good enough time to distribute them, since the functionality is being requested.

Thank you Jay, much appreciated.

We will have a look at it. If it suits our purpose we will contribute back any documentation, feedback, enhancements.

Does an extension meet the needs of MM users or would a Module be preferred? I like the idea of using the browse tree concept as I think this makes it very easy for end users to identify the right page to link to.

A tree-view module would be fantastic.  Our module just extends LinkIt, so it’s only an autocomplete text box, which hints at the hierarchical structure underneath each suggested link result.  Half of people are searchers, and half browse (at least, according to Nielsen) so the search box is guaranteed not to satisfy everyone.  Eventually we’ll have to come around and add a browse button under the search box so that both classes of people are happy.  I thought it’d be a lot more work until Dan’s email, so I think now I’ll add this to our short/medium-range goals (next month or so).  Thanks for the idea!
